Kalyani Brakes
Incorporated
as a private limited company in March 1982, Kalyani
Brakes (KBX) was converted into a public limited
company in November 1982. In January 1983, it
tied up with Allied Signal, (formerly Bendix,
whose brakes business was sold to Robert Bosch),
USA, a Fortune-500 Company to manufacture
air and air-over-hydraulic brake systems in Bambhori,
Maharashtra.
The company has collaborations with Nabco, Japan,
and Robert Bosch, Germany each holding 26.66%
in the company. The company commenced operations
in July 1984. However, due to the recession in
the heavy commercial vehicle market, KBX could
not launch its products in a big way.
It then shifted its emphasis to the production
of hydraulic brake systems, primarily for the
Maruti Suzuki 800 CC, Contessa and Premier
118 NE models. Thus, in the formative years,
the performance of KBX was affected both operationally
and financially.
The manufacturing facilities were expanded from
60,000 tpa to 100,000
tpaa. The company has now roped in NABCO, Japan,
its technical collaborator, as a financial partner.
The company has obtained the ISO 9001 certification.
The company has established a new state-of-the
art manufacturing facility at Chakan, Pune.
This new plant will supply brakes to foreign
car manufacturers like Ford, GM and Hyundai, and
has been set up at a cost of Rs 37 crore.
