Chapter and Verse
 Conceived
by book collector - late Arvind Gordhandas, the
bookstore has custom-designed shelves with loads
of serious reading material on a host of subjects
including literature, travel, history, philosophy,
religion and cookery. Fully air-conditioned, it
provides you with comfortable sofas to relax on
while browsing. Classical music sets the mood
to browse in peace. It has around 6000 books belonging
to different categories. At Chapter and Verse
you can get used as well as new books. It has
also got old editions of the National Geographic,
Times Literary Supplement, and the New York Times
Book Review. The bookshop is open on all days
between 9 am and 7 pm.
MANNEYS BOOKSELLERS
This is the oldest bookstore in Pune. Located
on MG Road, the shop has the perfect blend of
books and magazines. The shop has around 10,000
books that vary from bestsellers to scientific
books, books on defence to ones on specialised
subjects like architecture, philosophy, etc. The
bookstore is open between 10 am to 1.30 pm and
between 4.30 pm and 8.00 pm. The shop is closed
on Sundays.
CROSSWORD
 Located
in Sohrab Hall behind the Pune Railway station,
this bookstore has an area of about 3500 square
feet. It has books, magazines, CD Roms, music
cassettes and a special soft toy section for kids.
The best fiction collection in town is available
here. The books are catalogued on open shelves
and listed alphabetically. There are separate
shelves for new bestsellers, autobiographies and
encyclopaedias. There are tables and chairs where
you can sit and browse through a book sipping
hot coffee. Crossword has the largest collection
of both Indian and foreign magazines.
The magazines vary from the usual film glossies
to the ones that cover specialised topics such
as interiors. The store at all times keeps a stack
of about 50 different kinds of magazines. The
shop is open on all days between 10 am and 8 pm.
THE EXPRESS BOOK SERVICE
This is a small bookshop located on East Street.
It has a good collection of music cassettes and
CDs, though. Express is popular as at least once
in two months, if not more, it organises a sale.
It is open on all days between 10 am and 7 pm
in the evening.
THE INTERNATIONAL BOOK SERVICE
Located in the Deccan Gymkhana area, the store
has a good collection of both bestsellers and
books on subjects ranging from astronomy to physics.
Where this shop scores over the others is in the
fact that it is the only one in town where you
will find books in vernacular languages. It is
open on all days from 10 am to 1 pm and 4 pm to
7 pm.
