rights major  Stracon
India Ltd announced the western India debut
of the world's first Internet enabled gaming console
- Dreamcast, manufactured by
Sega Corp of Japan.
Starting with Pune, Stracon plans to extend
Dreamcast's distribution to the rest of Maharashtra
(including Mumbai) as well as Gujarat, within
the space of a couple of months.
Giving the reasons for Stracon having decided
to introduce Dreamcast in Pune first, Sunil Sethi,
VP Sales and Marketing, said that Pune
was known to be a city of early adopters due to
its cosmopolitan citizenry and was of the opinion
that Pune would serve as a useful test market
for a futuristic entertainment products like Dreamcast
in the western region. At present Dreamcast
is available only in Delhi and in Agra.
Mr Sethi said that Dreamcast was a highly
affordable and effective medium not only for top-notch
entertainment but also for more and more young
consumers to become a part of the Internet Revolution.
It is a 128 bit game console with a very significant
plus in the form of a built in 56k modem which
enabled it to be used as a network terminal for
high speed Internet connections. It also doubles
as an audio CD player. Dreamcast has been priced
moderately to enable it to become a dramatic new
driving force for increased net penetration in
the country. Stracon expects Dreamcast to be a
winner with children and teenagers as well as
youthful adults having a self-indulgent bent of
mind.
In order to maximise its reach, Stracon will
push Dreamcast through multiple channels and place
it in a wide variety of retail outlets. Apart
from retail distribution, Stracon will channelise
sales through direct sales agents, corporate sales,
super retailers and the Net. In the retail segment
Stracon has decided to extend Dreamcast's availability
beyond the conventional high value toy stores.
Customers will find Dreamcast in white & brown
goods showrooms, computer hardware & peripherals
stores, telecom equipment shops, supermarkets,
Video & VCD libraries and select lifestyle
retailers such as fashion outlets.
Stracon will also make available
all of Sega's world famous and award winning game
titles at a highly affordable price of Rs 495/-
onwards per title. Stracon India Ltd will bring
in all of Sega's top rated gaming titles on CD-ROM.
It's objective will be to ensure an adequate supply
of the latest titles in six genres Some winners
already being distributed by Stracon are Sega
Rally 2, Virtual Tennis, Shenmue, Soul Caliber
and Sonic Adventure. Also, all the latest titles
and games developed by Sega will be readily available
in India, as will any developments on the product
or accessory front.
