Situated
midway between Swargate and the Deccan Gymkhana
is the Sir Parshurambhau College, which
offers degree courses in the arts, science and
commerce streams. The college has well-equipped
laboratories to help hone the experimental skills
of the students. There is a separate library building
having more than one hundred thousand books and
over 85 periodicals.
An Olympic sized swimming-pool as well as a gymnasium
are open to the students of the college. There
are various science associations and debating
unions that conduct activities such as quiz competitions,
study tours, etc., for the over-all development
of the students. There is a co-operative store
located on the college campus where students can
buy all kinds of stationery. The college has been
implementing the National Service Scheme
since 1969, engaging students in various social
work activities.
The college has an NCC (National Cadets
Corps) unit with Army and Naval wings. The college
was started on 14th June 1916 and was then called
the New Poona College. In 1920 it became a full-fledged
Arts College providing education up to the Post
Graduate level. The science stream was added in
1927 while the Commerce stream was added almost
fifty years later in the year 1978. The college
came to be called as S.P. or Sir Parshurambhau
after the name of the father of the then Raja
Saheb of the Jamkhandi State in whose memory he
donated Rs Two lakhs to the Shikshan Prasarak
Mandali, the parent body which governs this college.
