With the Armed
Forces Medical College (AFMC) which trains
students to be doctors in the Indian armed forces,
and the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadagvasla,
Pune has a well-established tradition in military
services.
Pune is well known for its educational institutions.
Some of the reputed schools of Pune include the
Bishop's
School, St. Mary's School, Saraswati Vidyalaya
Union High School and Loyola
High School.
It
was established in 1885 by Lokmanya Balgangadhar
Tilak, Pandit Vishnushastri Chiplunkar, Principal
Gopal Ganesh Agarkar and Madhavrao Namjoshi under
the banner of Deccan Education Society.
The university was established
under the Poona University Act passed by Bombay
Legislature on February 10, 1948. With over 411
acres of undulating campus, Pune University is
renowned as one of the foremost centres for research
and teaching in India.
