'school-on-wheel' launched in Pune |
 |
|
The
city's first school-on-wheels was flagged off by
Mr T M Solso, Chairman and Chief Executive
Officer, Cummins Inc. USA. The Cummins India
Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Cummins
India donated the bus. It is custom-built to house
a mobile school for those who cannot attend conventional
school. It left the premises of Cummins India Ltd.
amidst enthusiastic clapping and cheering. Cummins
India Foundation will support the school-on-wheels
initially, for a period of three years. Speaking
on the occasion, Mr Solso said, "It gives
me great pleasure to flag off this school-on-wheels.
I think it is a commendable project and as a part
of the Cummins family, I am proud that Cummins India
Foundation is associated with such a laudable cause."
Mr Shashi Sharma, Cummins India Foundation Director
said, "It gives me deep satisfaction that
Cummins India Foundation is associated with this
project. Education is one of the three key areas
where CIF is focused. There could not have been
a better project than this mobile school and on
behalf of CIF I hope that we can help impart education
to children who are unable to attend regular school."
Underprivileged children in Pune and its outskirts
will now have access to education, thanks to the
support of Cummins India Foundation and the Door
Step School, which is an NGO working to make
education accessible to out-of-school children in
some areas of Pune and Mumbai. The school-on-wheels
project aims to reach out to children virtually
on the periphery of society, i.e. the children on
the streets, those working with hawkers and children
of construction workers who are unable to attend
a traditional school. Door Step School has also
been running an additional unit in Mumbai since
July 1998.
Commenting on the occasion, Mrs Rajani Paranjpye,
Founder & President of Door Step School said,
"We deeply appreciate this generous gesture
by the Cummins India Foundation. Its donation and
support of this school-on-wheels will surely go
a long way in imparting education to children who,
because of circumstances, are unable to attend fixed
time school."
