French Film Festival in Pune from 25th Feb
to 4th March
Great
news for all the French film buffs. The embassy
of France and the Pune Alliance Francaise are
are presenting a film festival of the celebrated
French Nouvelle Vague director Jean-Luc Godard.
Godard
exploded into the Nouvelle Vague
or the New Wave with the film Breathless.
Throwing out all the traditional rules of
filmmaking, Godard shot the film without a script,
using jump cuts and a shaky hand-held camera in
a freeform style. Godard began as a critic at
the influential journal Cahiers du Cinéma,
where he worked with other New Wave pioneers,
including François Truffaut, Claude Chabrol,
and Eric Rohmer. Throughout his career, Godard
has pushed the envelope in both style and subject,
setting new standards for experimentation in film.
One of the most important, controversial, and
prolific film-makers in history,
Jean-Luc Godard has maintained an unbroken string
of films in various genres and mediums from the
late 1950s onward. Godard has established a reputation
as a rebel who can work within and outside the
system, producing films that are creative, breathtakingly
beautiful, and yet commercial enough to earn back
their production costs. Godard is equally known
for his quirky and sometimes controversial remarks
on cinema and cinema making for instance "You
can love a woman but not a film, because you can
kiss a woman, you can't kiss a movie!",
and "All you need for a movie is a gun
and a girl".
This
festival is organised in collaboration with the
National Film Archives of India (NFAI). Prof.
Suresh Chhabria who teaches Film Appreciation
at the Film and Television Institute of India
(FTII) will introduce this festival to the audience
on Sunday 25th of February 2001. He will then
conduct a discussion after the last film JLG/JLG
on Sunday 4th of March 2001. All the screenings
will be at the NFAI auditorium at 6:30 pm.
