The best of Bollywood
Outlook recently conducted a survey for some of the
best Bollywood movies made till date; the jury included
prominent Indian directors of the present and the recent
past with varying flavours.
Incidentally, most of the movies that occupied the
top ten slots included movies made in the 60's and 70's
era and only one film from the current era featured
in the top ten. Now then, is there a message for Bollywood
to read in that? Despite the fact that the technology
these days, the craft of movie making these days is
leaps and bounds ahead of the 60's and 70's, why is
it that even some the big production houses have failed
to stand up to the standards of the 70's? Is there too
much focus on technicalities, finances, demands of stars,
locations?or to put it otherwise the foundation, the
essence of the story, is out of perspective these days.
Well, we can leave bollywood to ponder about the free
flowing questions that just popped out of our heads,
and have a look at some of the top films made in bollywood:
Taking the lead is Mother India, followed by Sholay,
Mughal-E-Azam, Pyasa, Sahib Bibi Aur Gulam, Do Bigha
Zamin, Kaagaz ke phool, Deewar, Awaara, and Lagaan.
These days the trend seems to be boomeranging back
as low budget Hindi and Hinglish movies are entertaining
the public with their unheard but simple story lines.
