Deah Jagdasia was in Poona recently
to inaugurate the Archies showroom on MG Road.
The twenty-one year old
Model and VJ has spent all her life in Mumbai
and has a variety of interests ranging from drama
to films and music.
During her brief stint in the city we spoke to
her on her varied interests.
Q.
Deah, Could you tell us something about your background?
A. I am a Commerce Graduate from Jai Hind
College, Mumbai and have majored in Victorian
theatre from Harvard University in the US. I am
a Kashmiri who has been brought up in Mumbai.
Q. How did you land up doing drama after
a Commerce degree?
A. Drama has always interested me. Even
while I was in College, I used to actively participate
in Dramatics. Moreover, you cannot major in Drama
in Mumbai. After completing my graduation, I applied
to Universities all over the world and got admission
to Harvard to study Victorian theatre.
Q. Most people, when they go abroad do not
come back. How come you chose to return?
A. I would like to answer this question
in two parts. My sister who went abroad has decided
to settle there. I am very attached to my parents
and from the beginning have been like the man
of the house. I came back for a vacation and decided
then that I would not go back to the US.
Q What did you do on your return?
A. When I was here on vacation, I did
a theatre workshop conducted by Anupam Kher. Among
those who attended the workshop were Hrithik
Roshan, Abhishek Bacchan and Kareena Kapoor. At
the workshop, a number of people noticed me and
I was asked if I wished to model.
Q. What was your first assignment?
A. My first assignment was an Advertising
Film for Clinic All Clear Shampoo. After that
I have done a number of Ad. Films and a number
of Music Videos.
Q.
Having been exposed to both Western and Eastern
cultures, which culture have you chosen to adopt?
A. I have always believed in assimilating the
best of both cultures. Both cultures have a lot
of good to offer. So, in a sense, I believe in
having the best of both worlds.
Q. Are you looking to get into films in
the future?
A. No I am not looking at getting into
films. Though I enjoy seeing films - I see a Hindi
film every Friday and like to read about films,
I am not interested in making films a career.
Q. Being a model yourself, What is your opinion
about girls from our country aspiring to be Miss
Universe and Miss World. Do you think all the
hype surrounding their victory is justified?
A. I feel that each one of us is entitled to an
opinion about these contests. Personally I do
not see anything wrong in these contests. In fact,
it is good to let the world know how good our
women are. As far as media hype is concerned,
it is good
as long as the projection of the confident, assertive
and independent minded Indian woman of the twenty-first
century is taken in the right spirit.
Q. You are now part of the nascent Indian
Music Video Industry. How do you see the growth
of the Indian Music Videos?
A. The Indian Music Video is like a fresh
fruit, if it is good it will sell. I have to admit
that the quality of the Indian Music Video has
improved over the past couple of years.
Q. Who are your favorite singers?
A. Adnaan Sami and Asha Bhosle are my
all time favorite singers.
Q.Which is your favorite holiday spot?
A. The Bahamas and Goa.
