Incorporated in 1960, Whirlpool of
India - formerly Kelvinator of India
was promoted by J R Desai and Associates.
In a span of three decades, the company
has grown into a multi-unit company manufacturing
refrigerators, deep-freezers, compressors,
electrical grade laminations, cash registers,
thermostats, microwave ovens and mopeds.
In 1994-95, it tied up with the world-famous
Whirlpool Corporation, USA, and acquired
its present name. Currently, Whirlpool Corporation,
US, and its subsidiaries hold 82.33% equity
stake in the company.
To keep pace with the fiercely competitive
market and to improve its market share,
the company modernized and expanded its
refrigerators (single-, two-, three-door
configurations). The company has also set
up a plant to manufacture dual-coated hermetic-grade
enamelled copper wire in technical collaboration
with MAG, Austria.
In 1998, the company commissioned
its state-of-the-art facility for the production
of environment friendly non-chlorofluorocarbon
(CFC) frost-free refrigerators at its unit
at Ranjangaon, about 60 kms from Pune. It
has also set up a Refrigeration Technology
Centre in Ranjangaon. Whirlpool Financial
India Ltd (WFIL), a 100 per cent subsidiary
floated in early 1996, was merged with Whirlpool
of India recently. Earlier, Whirlpool Washing
Machines, a 51 per cent subsidiary, and
Expo Machinery, a 100 per cent arm, merged
with Whirlpool of India.
Whirpool has entered into a joint venture
agreement with the United States-based Transamerica
Distribution Finance (TDF). TDF will hold
72% in the joint venture company, Whirlpool
Apple Consumer Credit Private Ltd.
Whirlpool has decided to set up a microwave
oven facility at Ranjangaon near Pune.
