A home grown market leader
Bhandari Industries Limited started
operations in Pune in 1983 with a capital
outlay of Rs. 60,000. It began with the
production of paper tubes, which were till
then imported into the country. Today,
the share capital of the Company is Rs.
3.28 crores, out of which 60% is with the
Promoters of the company and the rest is
with the general public.
The
company began producing its product - Bil
Tube at its factory in Chakan, near
Pune. It became a market leader in that
segment, with a 35% market share.
The company set up a dedicated plant for
Reliance Industries at Patalganga
in 1996. In 1997 the company felt the need
for advanced packaging solutions in the
Pharmaceutical sector and set up a state-of-the-art
plant to manufacture high quality barrier
films. This advanced technology is used
for packing of tablets and capsules. This
is a special line of business with only
a handful number of players all over the
world operating in this specialized activity.
The company has two major product lines
- BilTube and BilCare.
The BilTube unit is primarily into
manufacturing paper tubes for the yarn industry.
The company has two factories, one of which
is dedicated for Reliance Industries. The
present capacity of both the units is 500
lac tubes per annum. The paper tubes are
used for paper winding and film winding.
These are made of high quality kraft paper
and parchment paper. Most of the textile
majors in the country use this product.
"The company proposes to use the
present resources optimally and has no plans
to expand its present capacity for at least
the next 3 years," said Mohan Bhandari,
MD of the company.
The
BilCare unit is into manufacturing
of Polyvinylidene Chloride coated PVC film.
The product is unique and is highly technologically
driven. The company plant that manufactures
this film is one of eight such plants in
the world and is the only one in Asia. This
plant is DMF certified by FDA in
the United States and is also ISO
9002 certified. At the plant all the
necessary precautions are taken for protecting
the packaged product from bacterial or influence
from the climate till its consumption or
the expiry date. To achieve this the company
has established an R&D laboratory that
helps it cater to all these requirements
and provide value added services.
Today the company has a market share of
58% in the domestic market and the pharma
industry is expected to grow at a rate of
20%. The customer profile consists of Ranbaxy,
Cipla, Lupin among others.
In 1998 it opened a subsidiary in Indonesia,
called PT Bhandari Mishindo, which
also manufactures tubes for the international
markets. The plant makes specialized tubes
and cores. Recently the leading German investment
and development company, DEG invested US$
3.5 million in this venture. This will enable
the company to expand its capacity significantly
from the present 4500 tons to 16,000 tons
per annum by March 2001.
