Deepak Fertilizers
and Petrochemicals Corporation Ltd
(DFPCL)
started operations in 1982 by setting up
an Ammonia plant. The plant with a capacity
of 100,000 tones per annum was set up with
technical collaboration from Fish International
Engineering, USA.
The company in 1989
took up a massive expansion program with
a focus on natural gas and ammonia. This
resulted in the manufacture of a wide range
of chemicals, petrochemicals, fertilizers
and explosives. To ensure an uninterrupted
supply of natural gas, DFPCL laid its own
43 km long gas pipeline directly from Bombay
High gas fields to its manufacturing plant
at Taloja. It is the only company in India
with its own gas pipeline.
DFPCL has production
facilities at Taloja near Mumbai where various
products are manufactured. It is a state-of-the-art
plant with Digital Control Systems for process
control and the chemical laboratories are
well equipped with up-to-date test equipment.
DFPCL business can be broadly classified
into the following marketing divisions:
Agri inputs marketing
- This division manufactures 23:23:0 prilled
Nitro phosphate fertilizers. Manufactured
under the brand name Mahadhan, the fertilizer
is widely accepted by large progressive
farmers. Containing Nitrogen in both Nitrate
and ammonia cal form, it provides Nitrogen
to the plant immediately and gradually.
It also contains very high water soluble
phosphates. It is convenient for application
through seed cum fertilizer drill. DFPCL's
over 1,000-dealer network ensures doorstep
delivery when needed.
Industrial Chemicals
- This division manufactures methanol, grades
of Nitric acids and ammonia. DFPCL is one
of the largest producers of Methanol in
India with a capacity to manufacture 100,000
metric tonnes per year. Methanol is
used successfully in the manufacture of
Formaldehyde, Chloromethane, Methylamines,
DMT, Pesticides, Drugs and Pharmaceuticals,
Methyl Methacrylate, Dye Intermediates,
etc. DFPCL also manufactures Nitric Acid
in various concentrations e.g. 60%, 68%,
72%, and 98%.
Explosives - The explosives division
manufactures Low Density Prilled Ammonium
Nitrate (OPTIMEX) with an installed capacity
of 36,000 metric tonnes per year. It is
used for making Ammonium Nitrate-fuel oil,
blasting agents as well as emulsified ANFO
(HANFO) that are used for open cast mining,
underground metallic ferrous mining and
the construction industry. It also manufactures
uncoated Ammonium Nitrate as a raw material
for water gel explosives, emulsion explosives,
nitrous oxide and Guanidine Nitrate. Besides
providing world-class prilled Ammonium Nitrate,
DFPCL is the only company in India catering
to the varying needs of Ammonium Nitrate
for explosive manufacturers, limestone quarries,
coal mining and specialized metal mining.
From Ammonium Nitrate to coated and stabilized
prills, DFPCL's association with every customer
is tailor-made.
Deepak Research and Development Foundation,
is the Central R&D facility of the company
and is located at Pune. The R&D laboratory
has the seal of approval from the Government
of India, Dept. of Science and Technology
and is primarily involved in Research and
Process Development activities for new products.
It also supports improving existing technologies
with the objective of improving safety,
the environment, quality as well as overall
competitiveness. The R&D center works
closely with well-known scientists belonging
to premier research Institutes like University
Department of Chemical Technology- Mumbai,
National Chemical Laboratory- Pune and Indian
Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad.
It also has to its credit seven patent applications.
A well-equipped R&D center has enabled
DFPCL to develop many process technologies
for import substitution in the past as well
as taking on challenges for developing internationally
competitive processes.
DFPCL takes an active interest in environmental
protection. In addition to regulatory requirements
of the State Pollution Boards and Federation
of Indian Industries, care is taken to reduce
pollution by incorporation of appropriate
effluent handling and disposal systems.
DFPCL has taken a lead in developing technology
and setting up the Taloja Chemical division
based entirely on environmental friendly
catalytic reduction facility. This avoids
creating metallic solid wastes, which would
have been generated in the traditional process.
A large part of the R&D efforts are
allocated for developing environment control
measures in the development stage itself.
The company also helps other small industries
as well as customers in solving their environment-related
problems. Continuous training and education
of employees has created awareness and commitment
towards maintaining the required standards
throughout the company.
