Chemical Industries Ltd. (SCIL), established
in 1951, is a pioneer in the field of Pigments
and market leader in the Organic & Inorganic
Pigment Industry. In 1967, the company moved
to its present location in Pune. Until the
seventies, the company concentrated on the
manufacture of organic / inorganic pigments
and intermediates. By 1972, SCIL had
to restructure itself to bring down costs
and concentrate on the maintenance of quality.
The company is currently all set to face
the global competition and has restructured
its business processes.
 The
company is presently exporting pigment to
all countries in the world except the Communist
block. Its major export markets are Europe,
USA and Japan.
According to the Managing Director of the
company Mr Kishore Rathi
"Survival of Indian chemical industries
is a great challenge and the industry has
seen a very bad phase due to over capacity
and competition from overseas markets for
the last five years. To meet the challenges
placed by competitors, specifically those
in China, the company has adopted a policy
of downsizing, not by retrenchment, but
by not replacing the retired employees.
Moreover to face the tough competition the
company would be increasing its research
and development activities with more stress
on quality."
 The
company has decided to move all manufacturing
operations from its Pune facility to its
Roha and Mahad units in a phased manner
over the next ten years. Pune would instead
become the company's technology development
and R & D base and would continue to
remain the company's corporate office. The
focus market for toll manufacturing will
be the US, which currently accounts for
a small percentage of exports and will contribute
over Rs 30 crore to turnover the next few
years. For contract manufacturing activities,
which it entered only recently, the focus
would be on European markets, which account
for a chunk of exports.
The company has, over the past couple of
years, been focusing on expansion of its
pigment business at its Roha and Mahad facilities
by a total of 4,000 tonnes. It has already
pumped in Rs 30 crore over the next couple
of years. It has increased the total capacity
of its organic pigment production from 4,000
tonnes to 6,000 tonnes and in the second
specialty pigment production from the existing
5,000 tonnes to 7,000 tonnes.
