(Balewadi Sports Complex )
The
Shirke Group constructed this internationally
renowned stadium in record time. The facilities,
which include an Olympic size swimming pool, cycling
drome, athletic track and indoor gymnasium are
all of Olympic standards. The stadium, set in
serene surroundings, away from the noise and grit
of the city, is located in Balewadi off the Mumbai
Pune highway. The stadium was built for the National
Games held in the city in 1994.The stadium's track
has hosted international athletes like P.T. Usha
and Carl Lewis, etc. In 1997, the stadium hosted
the Asian TT championship.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium
Across
the Swargate bus stand stands the Jawaharlal Nehru
Stadium. Sprawled over an area of 15 acres, the
stadium has the capacity to hold about 45000 spectators.
Built in the 1960s by the Pune Municipal Corporation,
the stadium has been a witness to many of the
victories and defeats of the Indian Cricket team.
There are mainly two sports played here, cricket
and athletics. The Maharashtra Cricket Association
arranges matches at the national or international
level. Athletic events are held only at the state
and national level. Generally, interschool or
intercollegiate events taken care of by the various
athletic clubs are organised here. The stadium
is maintained by the rent it gets for hiring out
the premises to cricket or athletic clubs.
These clubs impart training to
sports amateurs. Currently underway is the Invitation
Cricket tournament organised by the Maharashtra
Cricket Club. A cricket match between India and
New Zealand has been scheduled in April 2001.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Stadium
The Chhatrapati Shivaji Stadium, near the Sangam
Bridge, had its glory days with the likes of Dara
Singh, Hind Kesari Satpal, Hind Kesari Kartar
wrestling here. More recently, the Dagdu Sheth
Trust's Hind Kesari, the Maharashtra Kesari and
the Balasaheb Kesari were also held here. The
stadium is run by the Rashtriya Talim Sangh Trust.
