You just cannot miss this
shop set up by the Rural Development agency, Pune.
After all, a village setting on a busy city street
full of concrete blocks is bound to stand out. The
courtyard outside 'Savitri' has bright orange Warli
paintings splashed all over their walls. The portion
on the left has been demarcated for a nursery. Here
one can pick saplings and potted plants at downright
low rates. Farm fresh vegetables are for sale on
the right. Savitri nestles inside. The ambience
is distinctly rustic. The articles displayed in this
shop are made by women who live below the poverty
line. Savitri helps them market directly by eliminating
middlemen. There are table mats, tea cosys, pickles,
spices, squashes, Kolhapuri chappals, jute items,
cloth bags and an assortment of other items. Simple
stuff made by simpler people with a lot of care
and touching sincerity.
An appeal painted on the wall says, ''Buying these
products will support and empower them.'' If one
can spare a couple of hours browsing through the
displays, one could surely spare a thought for the
less privileged amongst us. Think of it, the cloth
bags available in various sizes are a great buy
in this age of no plastic.
