Not just maestros like Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Sanjeev Abhyankar, and the late Pandit Jeetendra Abhisheki, but hardcore music lovers of Indian classicsal music as well make Pune the cultural capital of Maharashtra. For them, the events like the Pune Festival, the Dagduseth Sangeet Mahotsav and the Osho Festival have now become a part of their yearly calendar. But the most distinguished and the most eagerly-awaited one is the Sawai Gandharva music festival held every year in the third or last week of December.

Sawai Gandharva Music Festival

Come winter, and music lovers eagerly await the most coveted music fête, the Sawai Gandharva. Maestros like Pandit Jasraj, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Gangubai Hangal and Hridaynath Mangeshkar consider it an honour to perform at this event. People from all around the country and even from overseas come to Pune for the Sawai. The event commences at around 9 pm and continues till late in the morning. People stay up all night listening to the established as well as upcoming artistes. In the breezy and cold winter nights, sitting under the marquee with hordes of people and listening to the maestros is an enthralling experience.
