Sohrab
Hall: Pune's Hall of Fame
It's
known as the Crosswords building. In fact it's
the brightly lit yellow signboard of the popular
bookshop that catches your attention when you
pass by this impressive five-storeyed structure.
Constructed just over two years ago along the
lines of European architecture, it stands majestically,
five minutes from the railway station, at the
busy Tadiwala Road junction. The Corinthian pillars,
the fountain with water cascading gently, the
sprawling 'courtyard' helps to give it a palatial
look. Says Sanjiv Aurora, who along with
partner Farhad Bottlewala, promoted and developed
this property, "We wanted the structure
to reflect the Old World charm, build it the way
buildings were built." Architect Talathi
Pathanky & associates (Mumbai) have indeed
succeeded in bringing just that feel to Sohrab
Hall, named after Col. Sohrab Irani the
original owner of the property.
As
you walk in or stroll out of the parking area
towards the building spread across on all three
sides, you cannot help but be impressed by the
names you see displayed on the showrooms. Mercedes
Benz chose to display their classy car here.
At Astitva you will find designer salwar
Kameez that is bound to meet with approval, a
visit to Either Or with its funky interiors
and trendy garments is sure to get your spirits
up. Contemporary Arts and Crafts, the classy
shop next-door, with its smart interiors and understated
elegance is worth a 'dekko' as also Blues
Café, known for its sizzlers and live music
on weekends. Avenue, a multi-cuisine restaurant
spread across 9000 sq. feet is all set for a grand
opening and soon to join Macdonald's and Pizzas
Hut in Pune is Pizzaz Express right here
in Sohrab Hall.
A
quick glance at names occupying office space and
you conclude that this place houses only the crème
de la crème. Little wonder then that Pepsi decides
to chill out here and Sohrab Hall happens to be
the chosen destination for all the top Airline
offices too.
Big names yes, but
the boards that display it are nice, neat and
small. "We have certain specific guidelines
on how the name boards should look,"
says Sanjiv and continues, "We have had
to even bring down a few simply because we thought
it jarred and looked a trifle shabby,if appearances
didn't matter, we could have made it into a residential
complex and been indifferent to see clothes hanging
out.''
Sanjiv
and Farhad are a far cry from the stereotyped
image one has of builders reputed for their mercenary
ways. They have worked on clear strategies and
have made a conscious effort to woo reputable
clients. After all Sohrab Hall, arguably Pune's
nicest building deserves to be in capable hands.
And for all you out
of town visitors, the next time you are in the
city with time to spare, head not towards MG but
SH, because you deserve the best too.
