KOREGAON PARK AND THE ART OF 'PHIRANG' MAINTENANCE

The colourful lifestyle of the Ashramites succeeds in making a lot of locals see red, yet one has to admit that their presence adds a lot of zing to the city.

Come November and you find them spilling all over the streets leading to the Osho Commune. Crowds thronging the Ashram seem to swell during the winter months. They arrive from different parts ofCurios on display the world to gain first hand experience of the teachings of Bhagwan Rajneesh, aka Osho. Along with meditation lessons inside the commune, they are quick to pick up survival lessons outside. In no time they are at home in their new surroundings (including overtaking from the left on their Kinetics).

This is hardly surprising as all commercial activities in and around the vicinity are geared towards catering to their every need. The autorickshaws lined up on the streets are not interested in ferrying locals: they would much prefer to take the foreigners for a ride!

The florists try to woo them with an impresColourful fares on salesive variety of flowers. They may not be able to spell 'chrysanthemums' but they sure know how to pronounce it. Chowli-Mooli - Palak-Shalak... How boring! Broccoli, celery, parsley, are more like it. The coconut vendors try their luck, wooing them oh so tenderly. They have figured that locals are tough nuts to crack. Cybercafes have special deals worked out for them. If they get into heated discussions whilst chatting, no sweat! Some of them are airconditioned to help them keep their cool. And, yes, there's a German Bakery. This establishment takes the cake.

The sidewalk cafe owned and run by an Indian with a lot of assistance from Nepali youngsters, could pass for any European cafe. The variety of exotic breads, croissants and rolls available are very European in taste and flavour.

The Ashramites spend hours here reading newspapers, sipping hot cappucino, digging into cheesecakes and quiches or simply chilling out with the plethora of juices available!

At least some folks are having fun!
