National Society for Clean
Cities

The Pune branch of NSCC, Mumbai, was started more
than 25 years ago. Spear-headed by the spirited
Mrs Gita Vir, NSCC works towards
empowering citizens to become aware of their rights
and duties. The society has 28 Mohalla Committees
that deal with a variety of issues like pollution
control, vermiculture, waste separation and management,
violation /misuse of land and floor space index
and even traffic congestion. Thanks to the NSCC,
the city has brightly coloured garbage trucks that
do not exactly look like they are down in the dumps.
Registered ragpickers are trained in the art of
waste separation and administrators realize they
are accountable to the citizens.

United Liberative Action (Santulan)

Founded in 1997 by Bastu and Pallavi Rege, 'Santulan'
was set up primarily to educate and empower women
destitutes to be self sufficient. The women are
taught skills like paperbag making, book-binding,
etc. They
are encouraged to form 'self help' groups amongst
themselves where they are encouraged to save and
borrow, if need be from within the group and avoid
going to money lenders. Santulan also concentrates
on looking after the welfare of stone quarry workers
and landless labourers. The organisation also tries
to help unemployed youth in and around Pune disrict
seek gainful employment. A 'Pashan Shala' has been
set up to provide pre-primary education to the children
of quarry workers and basic education to child labourers.
Santulan is all about spreading awareness and education
to enable individuals from the lowest strata of
society be self-reliant and self-sufficient.
