Pt. Bhimsen Joshi

The
music he presents perfectly blends narration and
raga composition, overwhelming the listener.
Born on 14 February 1922, Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi
is accredited as the leading light of the Kirana
Gharana. He ran away from home in pursuit of his
thirst for music, eventually becoming one of the
maestros of music by giving a unique vocal expression
to all the aalaps of the Ragas. His
tremendous devotion and perseverance make him a
pandit or expert of his own kind. It was
Sawai Gandharva of the Kirana Gharana that
struck the keynote of his musical career. Panditji
has been conferred with several prestigious awards
such as the Padmashree in 1972, the Sangeet
Natak Akademi Award in 1976, the Mysore Sangeet
Natak Academy Award, and the Padmabhushan
in 1985. He earned his first platinum disc in 1986.
