Lieutenant General N C Vij

Lieutenant General N C Vij is the
new Southern Army Commander. He took charge on
October 1 from Lieutenant General S Padmanabhan,
who became
the new Army Chief.
The General Officer was commissioned
into the Dogra Regiment in December 1962. An Alumnus
of the National Defence Academy, the General
has graduated from the Defense Services Staff
College Wellington and has also attended the prestigious
National Defense College Course.
He has the distinction of having
held several commands during his army career,
which include the 4 Dogras, a Brigade in the East
in Counter Insurgency and in High Altitude areas.
He has commanded a RAPID division in the desert
and has the unique distinction of having commanded
two Corps, one of them a strike and one involved
in counter Insurgency operations in the North
Eastern Sector.The General Officer was awarded
the Param Vishisht Seva Medal by the President
of India for his exceptional services rendered
during the command of the corps in the counter
Insurgency operations in the North Eastern Sector.
A specialist in Military operations, he has been
General Staff Officer 1 in a Mountain Division,
a Director in the Military Operations Directorate
and Deputy Director General of Perspective Planning
at the Rank of Brigadier in Army Headquarters. As
a Major General he was Major General General Staff
Western Command.
Before assuming his present appointment,
he was Director General Military Operations at
Army Headquarters. He oversaw the country's historic
victory over Pakistan in the Kargil Operations.
For his role in the operations, he was awarded
the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal. He was also responsible
for conceiving and finalizing the ground Plans
of Operation Khukri, the plan to rescue the trapped
Indian Troops in Sierra Leone.
