Professor
Jayant V. Narlikar

Professor Narlikar has been working as the
Honorary Director of the Inter-University Centre
for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) set up
in Pune by the University Grants Commission since
1988. He continues teaching, research and creative
writing while shouldering the challenging task of
making IUCAA an institution of international standards.
A J N Tata Scholar, Jayant Narlikar became
a Wrangler of Mathematics at the Cambridge University
in 1959. He won the Tyson Medal for astronomy
in 1960. After obtaining a doctorate from the Cambridge
University he returned to India in 1972 and headed
the Theoretical Astrophysics Group at the Tata
Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) where
he also worked as a Professor. He was awarded the
Sc.D. (Cantab) degree for distinguished research
when along with Hoyle, he wrote the Conformal
Theory of Gravity. Professor Narlikar
has written books and articles in Marathi, Hindi
and English to popularize science amongst people.
He has been regularly appearing on the television
programme called Surabhi in which he answers
scientific questions put forth to him by people
from different walks of life. He has received several
state and national awards along with the Shanti
Swarup Bhatnagar Award for Physical Sciences.
Fondly addressed as JVN by students, Professor Narlikar
takes pleasure in occasionally inviting students
from the IUCAA to his residence for lunch or dinner.
JVN's house is one of the favourite hangouts for
the IUCAAns.
