At present, Pune is the focus of extensive economic
activity. Manufacturing of quality goods, the high
volume of transactions, along with sale and purchase
of services, is rampant in the city. Pune is also
earning the tag of the Hotel Goers' Paradise. The
per capita income, as well as saving and spending
of the wage earner is quite high in Pune, and it
is fast emerging as the hub of a lot of activities.
Areas around Pune are agriculturally active, accounting
for a major portion of Pune's agricultural produce.
Research and development in agriculture is active
at various institutes in the city.
Pune's Industrial Sector:
Pune and surrounding areas have a number of large
scale and small scale industries. These companies
manufacture a wide range of goods from vehicles
to consumer durables, oil engines, pump sets, pharmaceuticals,
chemicals, processed foods, refrigeration systems,
industrial filters and a number of vital intermediate
goods. In order to encourage development of industry
in the city, the Maharashtra Industrial Development
Corporation (MIDC) has
developed two industrial estates near Pune at Parvati
and Bhosari (near the sprawling industrial areas
of Pimpri, Chinchwad and Pradhikaran). At MIDC,
subsidised facilities are offered to the priority
sector manufacturers. The emphasis here is on tiny,
small and medium scale industries as they are high
priority undertakings as defined by the Indian government.
According to a recent recommendation by the Finance
Ministry of Government of India, the definition
of the small scale industry (SSI) is one where investment
in plant and machinery is Rs 1 crore (as opposed
to the previous Rs 65 lakhs).
Trade and Commerce in Pune:
Major trading venues for consumer durables and
perishables are Laxmi Road, Bajirao Road and Bohri
Ali, Mandai Market and Mahatma Gandhi Road, while
grocers and vegetable sellers operate in
the heart of Pune city. Banking is an important
essence of an economy. Private, nationalised (public
sector) as well as co-operative banks are based
in Pune. Most of the bank offices or their branches
are located on Fergusson College Road, Mahatma Gandhi
Road, and Laxmi Road.
Pune - The leisure centre:
Pune is also evolving as a favoured leisure and
business hub. More and more Puneites are venturing
into the leisure business, as 'eating out' is catching
up with the people. Restaurants, hotels, dhabas
(traditional highway joints) and motels are dotted
in and around the historic city. With more and more
expansion on the trade, commerce, education and
sight-seeing fronts, the hotel and restaurant business
in the city is seeing large scale expansion. |
