The Income Tax Department, Pune, falls under the
Department of Revenue, in the Ministry of Finance
of the Government of India. The apex body of the
Department is Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT),
New Delhi, comprising a Chairman and six members.
The Chief Commissionerate of Pune falls under
the administrative control of Member (R&A) of
CBDT, who is the Zonal Member for Pune Region.
Jurisdiction:
The authority of the Chief Commissioner of
Income Tax (CCIT), Pune Region, extends to the
whole of Maharashtra except Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
The Chief Commissionerate of Pune was created
in August, 1987. At present, the CCIT - Pune Region,
sprawls over an area of 3.09 lakh sq.kms. It has
offices at as many as 34 stations. There are six
administrative Commissioners of Income tax (CIT
) under theChief Commissionerate of Pune. These
are located at Pune, Thane, Nasik, Kolhapur and
Nagpur. In addition, there are appellate CIT offices
at Pune, Thane, Nasik, Aurangabad, Kolhapur and
Nagpur. Besides these, the office of the Director
of Income Tax - Investments, is also located at
Pune.
Regional breakup of industries:
The Chief Commissionerate of Pune is divided
into two distinct regions in terms of industrial
growth. The Vidarbha Region, comprising the districts
of Nagpur, Akola, Amravati, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli,
etc. Ore-based industries, steel industries, textile
industries and distilleries are concentrated here.
The rest of the region has sugar industries, automobile
industries, heavy industries in and around Pune,
Nasik, Aurangabad and Thane. Pune and its outskirts
have automobile industries, heavy industries and
recently the city has seen growth in the software
sector. In addition to these industries, the pharmaceutical
and chemical industry, banks and finance companies
also contribute in a substantial way to the Direct
Tax Revenue of Pune Region.
Number of subscribers:
With more than 16 lakh assessees and Rs. 2100
crores as the budget collection during 1998-99,
Pune Region is next only to Mumbai and New Delhi
in terms of revenue collections. There has been
a substantial growth both in the tax base as well
as revenue collection in the past six years. The
revenue collections in the Pune Region in the
last six years is given below.
